George Bissett Elementary

GBES Weekly Family Forecast (Nov. 15 - Nov. 19)

Good Afternoon Families,

We continue to have some close calls near the crosswalk at the entrance to the school. Entrance to the school parking lot is restricted to staff, deliveries, and visitors who have medical concerns. There is no stopping/parking across from the entrance to the school. This is for the safety of pedestrians. When children are present, the speed limit is 30 km/hr near the school. Please follow posted traffic signage.

• We have a group in our community offering to provide Christmas Dinners to families in need once again this year. Please email jhurley@hrce.ca or call the school at 464-5184 to speak to Mr. Hurley. They also appreciate donations for this wonderful cause. If you would like to donate, please send me an email or phone the school.
• Assessment and Evaluation Day is Friday, November 19. There are no classes for students.
• Parent-Teacher Interviews will take place on Thursday, November 25. There are no classes for students as staff will be participating in professional development in the morning.
• Parent-Teacher will be held virtually again this year. More information will be shared in an email on Tuesday. Appointments will be done using an online appointment booking system. You will need to create an account in order to book an appointment time to chat with your child’s teacher(s). Follow the link http://www.parentinterviews.com/gbe  or go to the George Bissett homepage and click on the green Parent-Teacher Interview link to create an account and book an appointment time. The link will go live on Tuesday, November 16th at 3pm.  Contact Mrs. Betts in the office if you need assistance booking an appointment to speak to your child’s teacher.
• Report Cards will be emailed to families next week. Primary students will only receive comments on their report card. There is no Developmental Scale (Well Developed {WD}, Developing as Expected {DE} or {Needs Development}) or Letter Grades (A, B, C, or D). Students in grade 1-6 will receive Development Scale Marks (Well Developed {WD}, Developing as Expected {DE} or {Needs Development}) on their report card for Term 1. WD means that a student has a Well Developed understanding and application of concepts and skills of outcomes. DE means that a student is developing as Expected in demonstrating their understanding and application of concepts and skills in relation to the outcomes. ND (Needs Development) means a students is having difficulty showing their understanding and application of outcomes. For students who are having difficulty with meeting outcomes, communication between home and school is important to discuss concerns and talk about next steps.
• There are times when students are going to miss school or arrive late because of an appointment or illness. This is understandable, however we have students that are often late or absent from school. This has a negative impact on their learning and that of their peers. Being just 10 minutes late every day adds up to an hour a week of lost learning. Over a year, this adds up to one week of school missed in a year! Being late for class often means important instructions are missed and the class is interrupted. Your child may feel uncomfortable and on the outside with peers.

Children need to arrive on time, ready to settle into their school work. Arriving at least 5 minutes before the first bell allows your child to interact with their peers and teacher and get themselves ready for their busy day.

• Students are reminded to bring in a reusable water bottle.
• Subway lunch takes place on Monday and Little Caesar’s on Wednesday.
• If you are interested in serving as a lunch monitor on a paid or volunteer basis, please call the school at 464-5184 to speak to Mr. Hurley or Mr. Gates.

Have a great week,
Jimmy Hurley
